2 Types of Exfoliants

The first thing to know when choosing the best exfoliator for you is that there are two types of exfoliants to choose from:

  • Chemical exfoliants: As their name suggests, these products use chemicals called alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or enzymes to weaken the bonds between skin cells so that dead skin is easier to remove. Chemical exfoliants are generally washes, serums, and peels.
  • Manual exfoliants: Sometimes known as physical exfoliants, manual exfoliators include scrubs, loofahs, and beads you can use to scrape dead skin off.

Most dermatologists suggest using chemical exfoliants. Manual exfoliants can be too aggressive for the skin on your face and are better suited for the rest of the body, where the skin is more durable. Chemical exfoliants are less likely to cause micro-tears in the skin, which can worsen any issues your skin may already have.

Choosing Your Exfoliator

Like many aspects of facial skincare, what exfoliator will work best for you largely depends on your skin type. If you're unsure of your skin type, you can determine whether your skin is dry, oily, a combination of both, or none of the above. Furthermore, you can find products specifically formulated for your needs if your skin is particularly sensitive or acne-prone.

Another factor to consider when exploring exfoliator options is age. Although people of any age can benefit from exfoliation, it will become an even more important staple of your skincare routine as you get older. Your skin produces less collagen as it matures, contributing to wrinkles and other signs of aging. Exfoliation helps your face produce more collagen, tightens the skin, and improves discolorations like dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

Whatever your skin type is, most dermatologists agree that exfoliating every day is excessive and likely does more harm than good. Drier skin needs less exfoliation, about one to two times per week at the most. Oily skin can generally handle exfoliation once every three days.

Still, even people with similar skin types may have vastly different exfoliation needs. It will likely take some trial and error to figure out the schedule that makes your skin glow. While you're finding that balance, a good indicator that you're exfoliating too much is redness and irritation.

However often you exfoliate, make sure you have a good moisturizer by your side every time. Moisturizer will help you protect and soften the newly exposed skin and keep it from drying out quickly.
