Fragrance

Also known as parfum, essential oils, fragrance-free, unscented

What is fragrance in skincare?

Fragrance is any blend of scent ingredients added to a product, listed on the label as fragrance or parfum. One word can cover dozens of ingredients, including essential oils. It is one of the most common causes of skin allergy, so sensitive and rosacea-prone skin does better without it.

Fragrance FAQs

Fragrance is fine for many people and a problem for some. If your skin stings, itches, or turns red easily, switch to fragrance-free products.

Fragrance-free means no scent ingredients were added. Unscented products can contain a masking fragrance that covers the smell of the formula.

Essential oils aren't gentler. Oils like lavender, citrus, and peppermint cause as many skin reactions as synthetic scents.

Signs include redness, itching, or small bumps where you applied the product. Stop using it for two weeks and see if your skin clears.
