Parabens

Also known as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, paraben-free

What are parabens?

Parabens are preservatives that keep mold and bacteria from growing in skincare. They have been used since the 1920s, and the FDA says there is no evidence that they are harmful at the levels in cosmetics. Some shoppers still choose to avoid them, and paraben-free products use other preservatives.

Parabens FAQs

The FDA and European regulators consider parabens safe at the low levels used in cosmetics. Europe limits the amounts of propylparaben and butylparaben.

A 2004 study found parabens in breast tissue, which raised concern. Later research hasn't shown that parabens in skincare cause cancer.

Look for ingredients ending in paraben, like methylparaben or propylparaben.

Paraben-free products aren't proven safer. They use other preservatives, and some of those cause more skin allergies than parabens do.
