What are occlusives?
Occlusives are ingredients that form a seal on top of your skin so water can't escape. Petrolatum is the strongest and cuts water loss by about 98%. Lanolin, beeswax, shea butter, and dimethicone do the same job with a lighter feel.

Occlusives FAQs
Humectants pull water into your skin, and occlusives keep it from leaving. Dry skin needs both.
Slugging is sealing your nighttime routine with a thin layer of petrolatum. It helps very dry or cracked skin hold water overnight.
Petrolatum and dimethicone don't clog pores, but they can trap oil underneath. Acne-prone skin should use them only on dry patches.
Apply it last at night, over your moisturizer. A pea-sized amount covers your face.
