Humectants

Also known as water-binding ingredients, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol

What are humectants?

Humectants are ingredients that pull water into the outer layer of your skin. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol, and urea are the ones you'll see most. They work best under a cream that seals the water in.

Humectants FAQs

A humectant is one part of a moisturizer. It draws water in, and the oils and occlusives in the formula keep that water from escaping.

Glycerin and hyaluronic acid have the most research. Many products use both.

In very dry air, a humectant used alone can pull water up from deeper skin and let it evaporate. A cream on top prevents that.

Apply them to slightly damp skin, then moisturize. The extra water gives the humectant more to hold.
