What is azelaic acid?

Azelaic acid is a gentle acid found in grains like wheat, rye, and barley. It clears the bacteria behind breakouts, calms the redness of rosacea, and fades dark marks. It is one of the few acne ingredients that also suits sensitive skin.

Azelaic Acid FAQs

Start with 10%, which you can buy without a prescription. Strengths of 15% and 20% come from a doctor.

Use it once a day for the first two weeks, then move to morning and night. Mild itching or tingling in the first weeks is common and fades.

Azelaic acid can cause a short purge, because it speeds up how fast clogged pores come to the surface. It usually settles within four to six weeks.

Redness and breakouts often improve in four to eight weeks. Dark spots take closer to three months.
