Sun protection is an absolute must when it comes to skin care, especially during the Summer months. The sun's harsh rays are one of the main reasons that premature aging is caused, leading to wrinkles, loss of firmness, discoloration and sunspots. A broad-spectrum sunscreen should be used every day in order to prevent sun damage, even during the days when the sun isn't so strong.

Many people avoid using sun protection products due to feeling heavy or sticky on the skin. However new, improved formulations are now much more gentle to the skin, making sun protection easy to use. Take a look at our range of UV protectors from brands such as EltaMD, MDSolarSciences, Replenix, SkinCeuticals and more.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor against UVB rays. It multiplies the time you're able to spend outside without getting burned. For example, if you usually burn in 10 minutes, with SPF 30, you'll burn in 300 minutes, or about five hours.

For daily use on the face, most dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more, although if you have sensitive skin, you may need at least SPF 50.

Choosing Your Sunscreen

When deciding which sunscreen will work best for you, consider these tips:

  • Get broad-spectrum sunscreen: There are two types of UV rays, and broad-spectrum sunscreen targets both. UVA rays can advanced signs of aging, while UVB rays cause burning. Both can lead to cancer.
  • Apply at least 30 minutes before going outside: Ensure maximum efficacy from the moment you step outside.
  • Explore water and sweat-resistant formulas: If you're going to swim or exercise, it's worth investing in a water-resistant sunscreen. These sunscreens' SPF levels stay effective for 40 minutes after contact with moisture, or 80 minutes if it's highly water-resistant.
  • Use physical protectants if you have sensitive skin: Sunscreen usually contains two types of protectant ingredients — physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, which can irritate the skin. Physical sunscreens with ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are less likely to be an irritant. Having trouble figuring out which sunscreens have only physical protectants? Try sunscreen formulated for kids!
  • Consult with your dermatologist: Before adjusting any part of your skin care routine, make sure you talk with your dermatologist about your options.
