Simply looking out the window isn’t a foolproof way to assess the risk for sun damage on any given day. As you might already know, your skin can sustain ultraviolet (UV) damage even when it’s cloudy outside. That’s where something called the UV index comes in handy.
The UV index is a tool that predicts the strength of the sun’s UV radiation. Measured on a 1 to 11+ scale, the higher the UV index, the greater the risk of harm and the faster you’re likely to get sunburned if you’re not properly protected.
Keep reading to learn more about how the UV index works and which sunscreens we recommend to protect your skin on high UV days.

The UV index can help you understand your risk and, when necessary, make adjustments to your daily skincare routine. On moderate-UV days, for example, you might want to be more diligent about reapplying sunscreen or throw on a hat for some extra protection. On high-UV days, you may want to avoid sun exposure as much as possible.
| UV Index | Risk Level | Recommendations |
| 1-2 | Minimal | Sunscreen is recommended for sensitive skin. |
| 3-5 | Low | Broad-spectrum sunscreen is recommended. Wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and sunglasses. |
| 6-7 | Moderate | Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Seek shade between 10am and 4pm. |
| 8-10 | High | Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen and limit time outdoors. Unprotected skin can burn quickly. |
| 11+ | Very High | Avoid sun exposure, if possible. Unprotected skin can burn in under 5-10 minutes. |

Here are some tips to keep in mind when considering the UV index:
On low-UV days (index 0–2), sunscreen may not be necessary if you’re not spending time outdoors. We still recommend wearing SPF 15 or higher, just in case. When the UV index is above 3, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. If your skin is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, go for full-strength protection with SPF 50.
Referring to the UV index is a great way to determine whether you need to step up your skin protection on sunny days. Just because the UV index is low, however, doesn’t mean you can skip the sunscreen. Sun protection is a daily necessity, whether the UV index is 1 or 11.
If you don’t want to add another step to your skincare routine, make high SPF daily sunscreen your default choice. At the very least, layer on some moisturizer with SPF before you head out the door on days you’re planning to spend inside.
