How to manage your Rosacea in the Summer Months

Rosacea is a frustrating condition year round, but you may notice more frequent flares during the summer months. The heat coupled with changes in your lifestyle can contribute to these unwanted flares and you may not even realize the changes. So, I wanted to break down some practical steps you can take to avoid the flush!

  1. Avoid the sun when possible. Sun exposure is a very common trigger for rosacea flares, but chemical sunscreens (especially those with avobenzone) are often not well tolerated by those with sensitive skin. For these reasons I recommend a daily physical or mineral sunscreen for everyone and especially those who suffer from rosacea. A tinted physical SPF will not only provide a little more protection but will also help camouflage some underlying redness. Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Seek shelter from the heat. Independent of sun exposure, heat can also cause your rosacea to rev up. I recommend seeking shade under hats and umbrellas and bringing a cool water bottle with you to hydrate as well as physically cool off your face. If possible, try to limit your outdoor time to mornings or evenings when the temperatures are a bit cooler and the sun less intense.

  2. Avoid foods and drinks that may trigger your rosacea. Unfortunately some of the summer staples like alcoholic beverages and citrus are known to aggravate rosacea (frozen margaritas anyone?) There are so many great non-alcoholic options these days so I would recommend opting for a flavored seltzer at the beach and avoiding the alcohol when possible! Pay attention to your own triggers as they can vary form person to person! If you’re not aware of your own triggers, I recommend keeping a journal to refer back to so you can start to see trends. If you know your triggers you can avoid a flare up much easier.

  3. Use anti-inflammatory and gentle skin care and avoid active anti-aging treatments until your rosacea is under great control. I love the moisturizer and cleanser from VMV Hypoallergenics! They remove over 100 of the most common allergens and use anti-inflammatory and calming ingredients.

  1. If these simple lifestyle and product adjustments don’t cut it, make an appointment with your Dermatology provider. He or she will be able to discuss with you the latest treatment options to manage your rosacea!
