How Does Hyaluronic Acid Help Your Skin?

Hyaluronic acid in skincare has been getting a lot of hype lately, and for good reason. This powerful ingredient is a type of sugar that’s already naturally found throughout your body,  including your skin. One of its primary functions is to bind to water – up to 1,000 times its own molecular weight! This not only helps to hydrate your skin, but also smooths away fine lines and wrinkles and imparts a dewy glow to your complexion.

So how does it work? Hyaluronic acid is a type of moisturizing agent called a humectant. Humectants work by pulling in moisture from their environment. When you use hyaluronic acid skincare products, those molecules can draw in moisture from the air and impart them onto your skin.

But according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, you’ll want to know whether your skin is naturally dry or oily before deciding which moisturizing products could be best for you. “If you have dry skin and live in a dry climate,” Baumann says, “hyaluronic acid can draw available moisture from your skin, causing dehydration. In this case, hyaluronic acid needs to be combined with a product containing an occlusive ingredient such as argan oil to seal moisture into the skin.”

Thinking about trying hyaluronic acid? These products have been properly formulated to maximize the benefits of this ingredient.

1. SkinMedica HA5

Like its name suggests, SkinMedica HA5 contains five types of hyaluronic acid, including both cross-linked and uncrossed-linked molecules as well as a proprietary time-release HA. This offers both immediate and long-lasting hydration and smoothness for your skin.

2. PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum

This product is a great option for dry skin types, as it contains three types of hyaluronic acid, as well as ceramides and niacinamide to prevent moisture loss. Ceramides are a key component of your skin’s natural protective barrier, and niacinamide is also a powerful antioxidant, perfect for helping to calm redness and soothe sensitive skin.

3. Replenix Pure Hyaluronic Hydration

A hydrating serum with built-in anti-aging benefits, this formula from Replenix contains a blend of hyaluronic acid, proprietary peptides for enhanced collagen production, and antioxidant-rich white tea extract. Use it on its own or add a drop or two to your favorite moisturizer or serum for an extra boost of hydration.

4. SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier

Aimed at boosting your skin’s own hyaluronic acid levels, this product has been shown to improve skin plumpness, firmness, and texture while reducing the look of fine lines and sagging. In addition to pure hyaluronic acid, HA Intensifier contains licorice root extract and purple rice to help preserve your skin’s hyaluronic acid levels.

Reach for properly-formulated hyaluronic acid serums to give your skin a boost of healthy hydration, smoothness, and a radiant glow. If you have dry skin, choose an HA product with built-in occlusive ingredients, or pair with your favorite barrier repair moisturizer for enhanced results.
