Ways to Protect your Skin from Indoor Heat

During winter, indoor heat or portable heaters are one of the main culprits of dry skin. Temperatures are dropping, goosebumps are rising and it's time to turn on the heat to stay warm. However, our skin does suffer from being so close to the heat or sleeping in a hot box of a room. Depending on how old the home or how strong the heater is, it blows out dry hot air on your skin. There are many ways to combat indoor heat dryness at home while you are cozy in your blankets. We will discuss ways to protect you from dry skin indoors.

What does indoor heat do to the skin and the body?

Indoor heat dries out the skin if you not careful and your skin will have a hard time protecting itself. Indoor heat can also dry out your eyes, mouth and can cause nose bleeds throughout the night. It is important to have ways to keep dry skin to a minimum.

Stay Hydrated at night

Drinking more water at night can not be stressed enough. Your body is made of 70% water. Water is essential for every aspect of your body and your skincare routine. It is always best to have at least a few glasses of water to stay hydrated before your seven to eight hours of sleep. It is best to keep a glass or bottle of water next to your bed in case you tend to wake up in the middle of the night because you are so thirsty. This will keep your skin moisturized from the inside out throughout the night.

Use a Humidifier

Humidifiers should be added in every home especially you are dry air quality in your area. Humidifiers add moisture back into the air to combat that dry air from your heaters. It will help keep your mouth and nose moisturized as well. Dry heat causes nose bleeds and dry mouth in the middle of the night, that's an uncomfortable feeling. It is a mess to clean up in case you have a nose bleed in the middle of the night. Just don't turn it up too high because that will encourage mold to grow in the home. Humidifiers are an essential tool for dry skin because it does a lot of work for you to keep your skin moisturized.

Lower the temperature

Take the time to lower the temperature of your heater just a tad so it won't feel like a hot box in your home. You don't need your thermostat higher than 75 degrees in your home, that more than enough. Any temperature higher than that would be too hot for the skin to handle, it dries out the skin and it can cause irritation. If you like to use portable heaters instead of central heat, make sure your portable heater is not too close to you when it's positioned. Portable heaters should be a few feet away from you, it will be able to warm up an entire room if you keep the room door closed mostly.

Seal Your Home

It is important to seal all the open crevices of your home so you don't have to turn the heat to extreme temperatures. It is best to make sure your windows are repaired properly and don't have any cracks. Make sure your fireplace is sealed if not in use. If you have an old home, make sure you have a weather stopper to seal the draft from the outside from coming in from the door. This is important so you don't waste energy and lose heat because of those cold drafts. This saves you money on your electric bill in the long run.
