June is Men’s Health Awareness Month
June is Men’s Health Awareness Month and with Father’s Day fast approaching I wanted to chat a little bit about skin care for the men in your life! Contrary to popular belief, many men really DO want to get started on an effective regimen and start to take care of their skin… I see this in clinic all the time! If your hubby sneaks a pump or two of your favorite serum now and then, you already know this is true and it may be time to get him his own!
Most guys don’t have the desire or patience for a 5 or 6 step regimen. The key with skin care for men is easy-to-use, multi-functional products! If you’re looking for a way to get the man in your life to take better care of his skin, what better way than the gift a short, easy, EFFICACIOUS regimen?
The basics of skin care and anti-aging remain true for guys, too! Building quick routines for men is something I do daily in practice. Trust me, when he starts seeing results he’ll be just as excited as you to do his evening regimen!
For cleansing, I love to recommend a gentle cleanser that can be used both morning and night. Providing him with two cleansers to just “wash his face” can feel overwhelming and a little too much! I love the SkinMedica Facial Cleanser because it effectively removes dirt, oil and impurities while being gentle enough to use twice a day, eliminating the need for two different cleansers:
Antioxidants are an important part of any anti-aging regimen, but most men are not willing to use an expensive serum everyday. I give my husband these Clarity Good to Go Wipes so he can quickly and easily swipe on some vitamin C and hyaluronic acid! He can also throw these in his gym bag or even take them on a camping trip. If he’s in a hurry in the morning, he can even skip the cleanser and go straight to the wipes.
Lastly for daytime we cannot forget sunscreen! Finding one he loves is crucial in getting him to use it daily! The good thing is that there are so many amazing formulations these days, and it can even double as his moisturizer. This keeps his morning regimen to 2-3 quick steps, one of which (cleanser) is likely already done in the shower. This Elta MD non-tinted SPF rubs in well without leaving a telltale white cast!
In the evenings he’ll want to cleanse to remove the day’s oil and sunscreen and follow with a basic moisturizer. My favorite moisturizers for my male patients are the La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat Moisturizer (oily skin) and the Elta MD Barrier Renewal Complex (dry skin).
Lastly, a retinoid is a fantastic way for him to fight the signs of aging including wrinkles, sun spots and loss of collagen/sagging skin. Even if he just uses it a few times a week it will work wonders for his skin long-term! My favorite easy-to-incorporate retinol is the Replenix Retinol 3x Serum!
If you don’t think he’ll want to commit to 3 steps in the evening, the MD Solar Sciences Evening Facial Repair Serum doubles as a light moisturizer and with a retinol mixed in!
